Fantasy Read

Green by Jay Lake

I like books where it takes half the book to know what is actually going on, not because the writing is confusing, but you are kept in the dark with the main character who is desperately trying to figure it out as well. This book was like that. Dark fantasy heavy on varied and interesting female characters in a vaguely steampunk world (he had two big steampunk novels, which I'll read next, so maybe they are in the same world.) The emotional side of the main character is developed so well, mostly because it is told in first person, so she reflects on events how she viewed them at the time, and how she views them "now." It's not an uplifted tale, nor is it for the squeamish since there is certainly violence, mental and physical abuse, and sex (of varied sorts.) But it does end on hope for the future of the land, the main character arrives emotional whole by the end and the journey is exciting.
